Statement

The Silk Code

Commissioned by the Asia Society New York, in conjunction with the international business conference: Kazakhstan, Trade and Investment at the Crossroads of Eurasia. The Silk Code brought prominent contemporary artists of Central Asia together to exhibit (many of them) for the very first time in the rapidly developing and thriving city of Astana, which has been the capital of Kazakhstan since 1997.

The word 'code' is applied as metaphor for Ahmady's curatorial premise-the means by which something is accessed. In a playful twist on words ("The Silk Route" being the most common tag-line ascribed to Central Asia), The Silk Code addressed new developments, breakdowns and breakthroughs, as well as artistic and cultural production in the region. Transformation as a philosophical and critical theme was present in all works in a variety of formats: sculpture, photography, video, and installation.

Artists: Vyacheslav Akhunov, Said Atabekov, Mariam Ghani, Gulnara Kasmalieva & Muratbek Djumalieva, Rustam Khalfin Jamshed Kholikov, Galim Madanov, Almagul Menlibayeva, Moldagul Narymbetov, Saken Narynov, Rahraw Omarzad, Alexander Ugay, Yelena and Viktor Vorobayeva.
